Welcome to Renee Dechert Ink!
If you’re familiar with my work, it’s probably because you’ve read my baseball writing at Purple Row or Rockies Pitch. (Find my portfolio here.)
I should say at this outset that this is not a baseball-centric project. Rather, I am hoping to create an old-school blog. If things go as planned, I’m going to enter a new stage of my life in about a year, and I plan to spend the time between now and then trying to figure out what I want my “third act” to look like.
This blog is part of that project since I generally do my best thinking when I’m writing through things.
(The “pivot to video” just didn’t work for me.)
At my core, I am a reader (currently working through Patrick Radden Keefe’s London Falling: A Mysterious Death in a Gilded City and a Family's Search for Truth) and humanist with a wide range of interests. In addition to sorting through my own thinking on this blog, I also intend to write about what I’m reading and watching and listening to. (I bought a record player about a year ago, and the return to vinyl has been a revelation.)
I’m not a photographer, but I enjoy taking pictures of things when I’m out walking (which I also love), so I’ll include some of that here as well.
But that’s what you can expect here: just meditations on whatever happens to be on my mind. Things will, I think, take more shape as I get deeper into this project.
As someone who’s spent my career teaching students how to do research, I’ve been thinking a lot, too, about the early days of the internet and an open web that has become increasingly siloed and corporatized. This blog is part of an attempt to push back (admittedly with little effect) on that larger corporate project.
I’m not planning to promote or monetize what I write here.
It’s just an old-school blog. Years ago, a colleague (a biology professor) said of winding down a teaching career, “The last year is for you.” That’s what this blog is: a writing project for me.
Rockies fans, I’ll still be doing my baseball writing. This is just a different space.
So, welcome.
Renee
